Labelling Dogs Behaviour

Labelling Dogs

Why labelling a dog’s behaviour is not helping nor supporting them. Imagine if you as a human were labelled at work as “not a good team player”. This could affect your promotion opportunities or hinder your self confidence, ultimately affecting your self esteem.

Yet this ‘label’ occurred at a specific team building event where you were feeling down and lacking in energy. Despite there being numerous previous occasions where you were team focused, helped others and genuinely supported your fellow workers. So one, unfortunate event has scared you in the eyes of those who will promote you and importantly – yourself. It is similar for our beloved dogs. They are put in a particular situation where they feel uncomfortable and respond by launching themselves at other dogs. They are labelled ‘reactive’ and so that label sticks. This blog is written by Kerry, a qualified Canine Nutritionist and Behaviourist, with scientific evidence.
