A gorgeous Winters day greeted us at Port Melbourne for our Truffle Hunt Tour and boy there were some excited pooches who had obviously been practising their sniffing techniques. We welcomed back Beatrice, Penny and Parlee to another tour and met Meg, Fang, Cookie, Beau, Bella (a friend for Bella the Bus) and Kyra.
Sharon warmed up the group with some Truffle Trivia and explained the day over morning tea as we scooted off to the Yarra Valley.
Our visit to Lilydale Lake was a welcome break to stretch legs and have a ‘wee’ stop. Now it was on to the official truffle business of the day at Soumah.
Lani from Yarra Valley Truffles was in fine form showing everyone how to hunt those little black fragrant nuggets and received many claps of support for her efforts.
It was over to our pooches to show us how to find truffles (with a little help from Hills Ideal Balance dog food, to encourage the noses). Beau was first and being a Pointer might have helped.
Parlee was certainly making sure she got her fair share of treats, cheeky monkey. Kyra was so fascinated by the possibility of rabbits the truffles didnt stand a chance. Bella was so well behaved and casually found her truffle treat without any fuss, what a beautiful girl. It took a bit of encouragement to get Beatrice and Penny – besties! to sniff out the treats. No underestimating Cookie and Meg, they might have been our smallest canine guests but they were all over this truffle hunting business. Fang was so keen to find the truffles he sniffed over the entire area just to be sure none were missed.
Soumah Winery excelled with lunch and the truffle butter was certainly loved by all. A wonderful selection of antipasto, followed by a choice of mains and a cheese board, and yes you guessed it, Turffles throughout!
With the pooches well rested over lunch it was time to move onto the next wine tasting at Madderns Rise on their thoroughly inviting grassed tasting area.
